Johnny Gargano vs. Aleister Black
“I absolve you of all of your sins.”
The Whodunnit storyline involving Aliester Black being taken out in the parking lot was an incredible angle. It gave so much screen time and shine to so many wrestlers. It ultimately concluded with the unexpected heel turn of Johnny Gargano. Johnny’s reveal and lack of remorse led us here to War Games.
The match starts great with Johnny trash talking a silent and stoic Black and only gets better. They throw everything and then some at each other. For every move one person makes, the other has a counter at the ready. Great example of that human game of chess metaphor. Johnny shines in his new heel role. Not only with just the trash talk and the crowd antagonizing, but every time he’s in control or pulls off a counter he has this really goofy smug look on his face. Like imagine Toms face anytime he outsmarts Jerry, it’s fantastic. Black doesn’t do too much different then his usual repertoire but if it isn’t broken don’t fix it and the crowd is into everything so.
An excellent match to cap off an excellent storyline. This felt like a grudge match which so many payoff matches fail to do these days. The wrestling is of course great but combine that with a hot crowd and Mauro Ranello on commentary and you’ve got a classic.
